Werder Bremen suspends, fines Naby Keita over refusal to play

Former Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita has been suspended by Werder Bremen for allegedly refusing to participate in the club’s match against Bayer Leverkusen. Keita, who also faces a substantial fine, is accused of traveling home after learning he wouldn’t start the Bundesliga game.

Despite traveling with the squad, Keita allegedly did not join them at Bayer’s BayArena upon being informed he wouldn’t be in the starting lineup.

Werder director Clemens Fritz has accused the 29-year-old of leaving the team. As a consequence, Werder suffered a 5-0 defeat, confirming Bayer’s Bundesliga title.

Keita will face a strong sanction, including exclusion from the first-team squad for the remaining five matches of the season, along with a fine.

“The club have also handed the midfielder a substantial fine. The [29]-year-old will no longer train with the team or be part of the first-team dressing room.”

Earlier this week, Keita accused his club of attempting to ‘tarnish’ his reputation, claiming that he has no history of disciplinary issues. He hit back in a statement on his Instagram page.

“I wish to clarify my situation at my club Werder Bremen. Ever since I arrived at this magnificent club, I have always shown my professionalism,” Keita wrote.
